Alex Lavrov

Alex Lavrov is a visual artist from Ukraine, currently lives and works in Vancouver, BC.

Working mainly with oils on canvas, he uses improvisation as his main method for creating art. Not pre-planning what artwork will look like in advance, the subjects of the paintings unfold by themselves during the creative process. In 1997, Alex had to leave Ukraine for studies abroad. The detachment from family and friends and the culture shock of unfamiliar environments proved to be quite a challenge. Art, which had always been present, became an integral part of his life through that period of immigration, helping him to deal mentally with the challenges of daily life and to process emotional struggles.

The artist states that it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that his art career was born out of pain, but since those difficult times, his involvement in art developed into something else – more of a tool for self-knowledge, a tool for understanding the workings of the mind. As a young man, Alex began to discover and explore various philosophies and religions of the world. As he grew older his interests shifted more towards psychology and recently, he has become captivated by the available literature on neuroscience.

His intent as an artist is to share with others his insights into the subjects of psychology and philosophy depicted through the symbolic imagery in his works.

Observing the workings of the psyche.
Peeking into the mind.
Feeling my way through the darkness.
Chasing the dimmest of lights.
